Sometimes I feel like this job just keeps getting stranger and stranger. Today is no expection.
Over the years we have gotten plenty of strange guerilla marketing materials in the mail from both AMD and NVIDIA. Apparently, this is one of those days.
After reciving just a tracking number, and no additional information from NVIDIA earlier this week, the mystery package finally arrived today. Upon initial inspection we had no idea what to expect.
When we opened the box, we were greeted by a polystyrene cooler with the logo of Bake Me a Wish, which only served to confuse us more.
As we opened the cooler, and the subsequent box inside of it, things started to make more sense.
Inside the box, we were greeted by a chocolate cake, accompanied by a card from NVIDIA.
As you may remember at this year's GTC Conference, NVIDIA announced that they had ported Valve's Portal to Android and would be releasing it for SHIELD. Today we were greeted with a reminder of that, and the message that we should be able to try it for ourselves.
A teaser from this year's GTC Keynote
While we can't talk about our experiences with Portal just yet, stay tuned to PC Perspective for more coverage of the NVIDIA SHIELD and Portal very soon!

When Nvidia gets a K1 inside
When Nvidia gets a K1 inside their shield, then I am very interested, but Android is very much like a hemorrhoid, compared to full Linux(Hopefully a Steam OS based tablet). So I hope that Nvidia can get some K1 design wins on a full linux based tablet, or a development mode for the Shield(K1 based) that allows for a full Linux distro, in addition to Android. And what of those Denver Cores, green team. The K1 supports the full desktop/laptop versions of OpenGL, cuda, etc. So, what about any full Linux refrence tablet designs from your chatty green team CEO, and his Ballmeresque playbook. It’s K1 Vs Beema/Mullins for the coming year.
isn’t that depends on OEM?
isn’t that depends on OEM? from what i can see OEM favoring windows(x86 SoC) and android based tablet. i know there are people interested with full linux on tablet but as we know OEM will only make one if there are HUGE interest for it from consumer side. because to them profit is the first priority. if you’re interested to run full linux on tegra you can get their jetson TK1 dev board. those folks from Phoronix are running benchmark on it using Ubuntu
Bench it running Steam OS,
Bench it running Steam OS, Ubuntu is the bloat OS of the Linux world, and does the jetson TK1 come with a touch screen addon kit, like the Raspberry PI. The jetson TK1 development kit comes with some licensing strings attatched?, with the SDK. The jetson TK1 is more of a testing mule for embedded software, but I would love to see an utra low profile experimenter’s KIT built around the K1 SKU that could be fitted into a tablet formfactor, and some 3d case models that the users could print. That PI based working cell phone was really great. The AMD Beema and Mullins SKUs could make for some interesting kits to, the AM1 board is socketable so the CPU can be updated. But Android only is not going to sale me any device.
What’s this I’m reading No
What’s this I’m reading No OpenCL support on the jetson TK1, Oh NO NO NO, CUDA only! Is this TRUE?
Also, The OEM’s are heavily incentivized towards using the consumption OS Android. It’s No wonder why tablet sales are going into a slump, the newer mobile device SKUs are becoming powerfull enough to support a full linux distro, but the ad revenue based creator/s of the “approved” Android ecosystem have the big bucks to lock full linux out of the market with their influnce over OEM’s. There should be OpenCL support, and the Khronos full Standard APIs should be supported. Most of the ARM based mobile market run on the OpenGL, OpenCL, etc. software stack, and Nvidia’s, AND AMD’s competition with their proprietary APIs is fine, as long as the Open graphics APIs/driver support is not adversely affected. Vendor lockin is not going to sale more tablets.
