Lenovo has teased a pair of new docks for their upcoming ThinkPad refresh at CES, with both Thunderbolt 3 and USB Type-C options. We don’t have a lot of details but the photos from Lenovo show the available ports on these two docks.

The ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock supports up to 3 displays, with a pair of DisplayPort outputs along with a full size HDMI. The front panel offers a Thunderbolt 3 port, USB, and 3.5 mm audio, and the rear offers four more USB 3.0 ports (one charging), LAN, and a VGA output.

The Type-C dock supports up to 2 displays via DisplayPort, and has three USB 3.0 ports between the front and back panel (plus a front panel Type-C port), along with legacy USB 2.0 ports for peripherals. The smaller dock retains VGA and LAN ports as well.

Expect full specifications after the official launch of these products, presumably at CES 2017.

Any idea if this dock will work universally with Windows based PCs equipped with Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C? I would like to expand the IO of my Razer Blade Stealth when at my desk.

What happens if I connect it to a WAN instead?

These are for tablets and ultra-lights, where LAN ports simply wont physically fit due to thinness. The parent device (tablet, laptop, etc…) has WAN support already most likely (WiFi, 4G, etc…), so no need for it in a dock. We have them at my work to convert ultra-lights/tablets into full blown desktop setups.

I’m wondering if it’s USB 3.1 Gen 1 or 2.
The current world of USB-C docks is full of accessions and limitations. It’s the most un-Universal USB related implementation yet.
AFIK there’s no shipping non-propriatary Thunderbolt 3 docks. OWC and Belkin have announced them, due in the next few months. Hopefully TB3 is less picky than current USB-C implementations.
