Regardless of the initial reaction to Steam, the online game distribution/download service from Valve, it is definitely growing.  Newest is Take-Two interactive, and there have been many game publishers that have joined recently.  Ars Technica takes a look at Steam’s success.
“The idea of selling games directly to consumers via Internet downloads was given a huge boost by the introduction of Valve’s Steam service. Initially, the highlight game available on Steam was Valve’s own epic Half-Life 2, but other companies started to hitch their wagon to the Steam train shortly thereafter. Now, Valve and Take-Two have announced that the latter’s publishing label “2K” will be releasing select games on the Steam service, including Sid Meier’s Civilization III, Civilization IV, and Pirates!

The Steam service has been adding many new publishers to its stable as of late, including Majesco, who added their titles BloodRayne and Advent Rising to the service, as well as Double Fine Productions, who made their quirky yet critically-acclaimed game Psychonauts available on Steam earlier this month.”
