Over the last few days, Dustin Land of id Software has been publishing commits to his vkDOOM3 GitHub repository. This project, as the name suggests, adds a Vulkan-based renderer to the game, although it’s not really designed to replace the default OpenGL implementation. Instead, the project is a learning resource, showing how a full application handles the API.
This is quite interesting for me. While code samples can show you how a chunk of code is used in rough isolation, it’s sometimes good to see how it’s used in a broader context. For instance, when I was learning Unreal Engine 4, I occasionally searched into the Unreal Tournament repository for whatever I was learning about. Sometimes, things just don’t “click” until you see the context, especially when your question starts with “why”.

Interesting Bristol Ridge
Interesting Bristol Ridge video(1), now the the home system builder can get their hands on some Bristol Ridge/AM4 SKUs!
I want to know how Blender 3d would do with a mini/micro ATX motherboard build for a mini desktop BR system build that could be updated later to Raven Ridge/APU when that becomes available.
I do not have much hope for there to be many AMD based Raven Ridge laptops available from stores like staples and such as Intel May just be up to their old tricks again.
So it looks like a mini desktop home Build(Linux OS based).
Scott what do you Think of System76’s home grown Linux Build have you read that article over at Ars Technica.
I waiting to hear about their in house laptop designs but I do not have much hope for any System76 with AMD APU options and AMD really need to find a Linux Laptop OEM partner so the Linux OS based laptop market can have some chioces in hardware to go along with a linux OS.

It’s a game this is a game and Vulkan is a graphics API! And we know that Vulkan and That BR(A12-9800) SKU may make for some nice low cost gaming while folks wait for the Vega stocks to be replenished. And that BR A12-9800 supports DDR4 mamory.
Also PCper/other websites are ignoring any AMD Desktop APU discussions and that any Desktop Zen/Vega based APU SKUs will not be svailable until 2018. Raven Ridge APUs will only be mobile offerings this year and fat chance for any OEM laptop Raven Ridge APU SKUs on the retal outlet shelves becuse(Intel Mostly)you know how that turns out even with AMD’s mobile APUs being better performing gaming wise(even this BR A12-9800 SKU) compared to Intel’s more costly SOCs with that low cost Intel graphics “option” instead!
You Know that Intel graphis that you get in SOC, take it or leave it, that never semms to come with the higher end IRIS “Pro” graphics as Intel uses IRIS “Pro” mostly for show and never offeres it widely throughout its SOC offerings!
And Bristol Ridge APUs use AM4 motherboards, so why not look at some mini-ATX/micro-ATX MB SKUs and use that BR A12-9800 APU SKU to do some testing/benchmarking for a low cost AMD Desktop APU based build that can be updated to a Raven Ridge desktop APU in 2018! Because as you Know of Raven Ridge being available in mobile SKUs only this year are NOT going to have a good chance(Fat Chance really) of being in stock/on the shelves inside of OEM laptops(That Intel Inside Thing/Wads of cash, wink wink) with a Raven Ridge APU SKUs inside.
So with most Laptops sporting crappy Intel/Inside dual core i7 Ultrabook, with Intel’s graphics “Options”(Crap), clogging the retailer outlet shelves in a take it or leave it fashon, some folks are avoiding laptops and instead maybe looking to build and use a mini-desktop PC AM4/APU build with an AMD Latest BR APU inside(the A12-9800)! And that AM4 motherboard/DDR4 can be used with a Raven Ridge APU SKU come 2018!
So You See Vulkan is a graphics API used in games and that linked to video shows the A12-9800 used for gaming and gaming quite well!

APUs are great low cost SKUs for those mini-desktops and Vulkan gaming on Linux with that RADV open source driver. So Vulkan is great for no vendor lock-in gaming on AMD’s APUs! Brsitol Ridge AM4 SKUs can be purchased by home systems builders(Now) for some nice mini form factor Desktop builds with that AM4 motherboard able to be updated to a desktop Zen/Raven Ridge desktop SKU in 2018.
I’m looking forward to some benchmarking on that A12-9800 Bristol Ridge APU and some mini/micro ATX/other from factor motherboards. That way I can avoid Intel inside of laptops and use my mini desktop PC until the laptop OEM’s begin offering Raven Ridge laptop SKUs. Hopefully system76 or some other Linux OS laptop OEM will begin offering some Linux laptop SKUs that are Intel/Nvidia free, with Raven Ridge APUs inside and more affortable also!
Watch out for those Intel Inside(dirty tricks) all over again when the Raven Ridge APU SKUs arrive! AMD needs to make some mobile Raven Ridge APU SKUs with a single stack of HBM2(2GB, or 4GB) as that way the OEMs(Via Intel’s Loyality kick-backs) can not bork the APUs’ integrated graphics by only offering AMD laptops with a single channel to DDR4 DIMM memory.
This is because with that Vega HBCC/HBC the game will run from the HBM2 cache and having only a single channel to DIMM basd DRAM memory will not starve the APU’s integrated graphics of needed bandwitth. The Vega HBCC will manage and regular DIMM system memory channel transfers to HBM2/cache in the background so the Vega graphics need only feed from HBM2 at up to 256GB/s of effetive bandwidth.
It’s still rather uncertian if the first Raven Ridge APUs will have any HBC/HBM2 so that’s a question to be asked of AMD and maybe if the Raven Ridge APUs does not come with HBM2 AMD will have provided some eDRAM. But who knows until More is Known about the Raven Ridge APU SKU offerings this time around. It’s getting closer to the last quarter of 2017 so there is not much time to wait!

Doom 3 was a great game I’m
Doom 3 was a great game I’m not sure why they would add Vulkan to it as it only requires a 512mb video card to run and a 2ghz dual core CPU. You can more than exceed that in a budget laptop these days.
I noticed the above poster carefully omitted the success of Nvidia laptop chipsets. I once tried the igpu option for a notebook which was OK for a time. However once you get one with discrete graphics you will realize that you weren’t truly gaming.
APUs and iGPU are really only good for net surfing and watching video or playing not so modern games or casual games.
AMD’s APU’s graphics are
AMD’s APU’s graphics are better than Intel’s SOC graphics for Blender 3d workloads and Raven Ridge/Vega APU graphics if is it better than the graphics on say AMD’s 7650m(terascale SKU, mobile Rebrand) graphics will be fine for Blend 3D.
Intel’s graphics are fine for lower poloygon count mesh models(used in gaming) but not for the highe polygon count ones. Nvidia’s Tegra X1 SoC integrated Graphics is better than Intel’s integrated graphics also. Intel’s integrated graphics lacks the shader counts and ROP/TMU counts/resources compared to Nvidia’s and AMD’s graphics that make Nvidia’s/AMD’s good for more than just gaming graphics and Nvidia/AMD graphics also work good with Blender 3D.
Intel’s grahics chokes on any high polygon count models/scenes in Blender’s 3D editor, so working with high polygon models/scenes requires AMD/Nvidia graphics.
The point of adding Vulkan is
The point of adding Vulkan is to provide learning resources… an open-source, but still real-world example. Also, who wouldn't want to break four digits on their FPS? :p
