As the first Oculus Rift retail units begin hitting hands in the US and abroad, both AMD and NVIDIA have released new drivers to help gamers ease into the world of VR gaming.
Up first is AMD, with Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.3.2. It adds support for Oculus SDK v1.3 and the Radeon Pro Duo…for all none of you that have that product in your hands. AMD claims that this driver will offer "the most stable and compatible driver for developing VR experiences on the Rift to-date." AMD tells us that the latest implementation of LiquidVR features in the software help the SDKs and VR games at release take better advantage of AMD Radeon GPUs. This includes capabilities like asynchronous shaders (which AMD thinks should be capitalized for some reason??) and Quick Response Queue (which I think refers to the ability to process without context change penalties) to help Oculus implement Asynchronous Timewarp.
NVIDIA's release is a bit more substantial, with GeForce Game Ready 364.72 WHQL drivers adding support for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and improvements for Dark Souls III, Killer Instinct, Paragon early access and even Quantum Break.
For the optimum experience when using the Oculus Rift, and when playing the thirty games launching alongside the headset, upgrade to today's VR-optimized Game Ready driver. Whether you're playing Chronos, Elite Dangerous, EVE: Valkyrie, or any of the other VR titles, you'll want our latest driver to minimize latency, improve performance, and add support for our newest VRWorks features that further enhance your experience.
Today's Game Ready driver also supports the HTC Vive Virtual Reality headset, which launches next week. As with the Oculus Rift, our new driver optimizes and improves the experience, and adds support for the latest Virtual Reality-enhancing technology.
Good to see both GPU vendors giving us new drivers for the release of the Oculus Rift…let's hope it pans out well and the response from the first buyers is positive!
So if I have a RIFT and an
So if I have a RIFT and an AMD GPU, I’m just sitting here waiting for a driver?
Heyyo, much like game
Heyyo, much like game drivers? I’m sure the Occulus Rift will still work but it probably won’t work as good as official compatible drivers is all. I doubt we shall see benchmarks or articles talking about VR with varying driver versions as an example but yeah it does sound like it’s best to wait for AMD to put out their driver which would probably be a day at the most is my guess.
New AMD driver is available
New AMD driver is available for download. What is you talking about?
Enjoy your waiting for driver
Enjoy your waiting for driver bullshit from AMD again lmfao
I’m sure AMD users are
I’m sure AMD users are already used waiting for longer for new drivers and graphics card to be released than Nvidia users, its all part of the AMD experience.
Between Nvidia delivering a
Between Nvidia delivering a Blue Screen of Death update, and AMD’s earlier massive memory leak update, neither company has exactly covered themselves in glory recently.
Haha. Lol after NVidia issued
Haha. Lol after NVidia issued back to back drivers that crashed so badly you had to do a system restore. Lol! Meanwhile Pascal is not even out yet and like all nvidiot cards it doesn’t support DirectX 12 in ANY SIGNIFICANT WAY, UNLIKE OLD 7700 series and up AMD cards. The R9 390 continues to beat the laughably more expensive GTX 980 in all DirectX 12 game benchmarks. Enjoy your old technology card and drivers.
Keep drinking that koolaid,
Keep drinking that koolaid, helps keep your ignorant mind clouded with delusional vapor hype & lies!
I hope AMD also optimizes
I hope AMD also optimizes Dark Souls III before the release.

The drivers where ready for downloading when that link of the release notes gone live. You just have to navigate to the driver download page. It’s just two clicks/pages away.

Did you even read the Oculus source?
They implemented Async Timewarp, which on AMD, uses the Async Shaders to rapidly process the timewarp task in PARALLEL with graphics.
For a tech site, you guys are so amateurish. TR have you beat for in-depth info.

I was thinking the same when
I was thinking the same when I read the article yesterday…and it really get a bit tiresome to read pcper.
“Nvidia has a substantial driver update, AMD…nah, who cares.”
Unfortunately, it’s not that Ryan is not familiar with the tech, I guess he deliberately chooses to flop everything AMD related. Sad, but this is the state of…tech related…”journalism” these days.
Thanks for the link, good
Thanks for the link, good read. Nice on paper and in theory but lets see if its actually benefiting in real world VR games which is still to be properly tested and I dont see any tech site having a good idea or method to get those testing going…
Yeah, this is extremely hard
Yeah, this is extremely hard to test properly and accurately. We're doing a lot of work behind the scenes for this.
Thanks Allyn for informing us
Thanks Allyn for informing us on that. I dont mind waiting until you guys or other tech sites get a good way of testing. Even if it takes till next year. I’m not buying any VR stuff until I have tried it myself somewhere and also it being tested properly.
Not buying into any of Nvidia and AMD PR stuff…
Still very early for VR and testing etc. so take your time to perfect the testing *thumbs up*
Nvidia cards are losing
Nvidia cards are losing performance without “Asynchronous compute” cores. None of their cards have this. Nvidia has release crappy drivers in the last few months, what’s up with that?
Guess my new card is coming from “AMD”, since they have been supporting Asynchronous Computing 2 GPU generations backs.
That’s “your opinion” and
That’s “your opinion” and money. If you so fast in that conclusion by all means give AMD your money.
I made a switch after years and multiple cards from AMD. Even now they are finally improving on the drivers but not there yet. With nvidia since fermi, kepler and now maxwell and haven’t gotten any real or big issues with tweaking and overclocking their cards and on my system from win 7 to 8.1 to 10 (single GPU and monitor user here) I even jumped on the VRR tech with their g-sync monitor. Overall I’m 90% happy with their products (Shield android tv included). And game performance. This alone is not going to sway me over to AMD by any chance and I follow all GPU & VR related news.
