The monolithic desktop CPU option
AMD has now officially launched their new Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F processors, after reports of a quiet initial release in China surfaced a few days ago. With these new processors we are (presumably) getting the same mobile-based, monolithic CPU cores from the 8000G series, but without the iGPU.
AMD says that the Ryzen 8000 F-Series processors “are optimized for efficiency with low power draw and are unlocked for higher overclocked performance at the touch of a button”, but far more important in 2024, in addition to whatever standard computing you may have had in mind “the 8700F comes equipped with a cutting-edge Neural Processing Unit, or NPU, a dedicated AI engine designed for the ultimate in AI efficiency”. In case you were confused, this means that the Ryzen 5 8400F is devoid of NPU.
The Ryzen 7 8700F is 8 core, 16-thread part with a base frequency of 4.1 GHz and boost frequency up to 5.0 GHz, 24MB of total cache, onboard NPU, and a 65W TDP. The Ryzen 5 8400F is a 6-core, 12-thread part with a base freq. of 4.2 GHz and boost up to 4.7 GHz, 22MB of total cache, and the same 65W TDP.
The new processors are said to be available starting today, with the Ryzen 7 8700F bearing a retail price of $269 USD, and the Ryzen 5 8400F at $169 USD. AMD also provided media with slides with some performance numbers relative to the competition, which are posted below.
