CES 2021: Nvidia RTX Game ON Event
Nvidia Kicking off 2021: hardware and games!
Nvidia presented plenty of exciting new gear and RT aware games during their presentation at CES today.
Right off the bat, Nvidia now reports that 36 games incorporate RTX enhanced features. Newly RTX enabled games now include ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’, ‘Iron Conflict’, ‘Edge of Eternity’, and ‘Outriders’. Nvidia RTX technology will include the commonly praised DLSS, Ray Tracing itself and low latency Reflex.
Outriders looks especially tasty as a cross over between tech dystopia and fantastical sorcery, looking forward its Ray Tracing effects. We talked about this game as “The Best New Shooter of 2021 at day 7” during our last podcast.
Visual sizzle is not all. Nvidia Reflex, a mechanism for delivering the lowest system latency for competitive gamers, is also gaining adoption. Since its launch in September 2020 a dozen games have added support. Today, Nvidia announced that ‘Overwatch’ and ‘Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege’ are adding the technology.
RTX 30 Series Gaming Laptops
Promising some really series portable frame rates, Nvidia announced the launch of 70+ models powered by their GeForce 30 Series Laptop GPUs. Models will include options from the full range of 3080, 3070, and 3060 will full Ampere architecture. Prices will range from $999 with a 3060 series to $1999 with a 16GB 3080. Nvidia is introducing their third-generation Max-Q technology in the thin & lightweight category, stating 2x energy efficiency improvements with dramatic improvements in graphics performance – which is easy to believe if the portable GPU series parallels their desktop cousins.
Studio Laptops, for Creative Professionals
Not to be left behind, Nvidia also is serving up portable performance for professional content creators on the go with their Studio Series. Rolling out later this month, these laptops empower the next generation of creativity by delivering up to 2x the performance in creative applications, having up to 16GB of video memory with obvious benefits in working with large digital assets or data sets. The Studio Series will come with 1440p and 4k display options, allowing software to easily leverage AI features and video encoding workflows / acceleration.
The RTX 3060, Officially now
Perhaps one of the worst kept “secrets” of the gaming tech scene lately, Nvidia officially announced coming availability for the RTX 3060. At the starting price of $329, the RTX 3060 is said to have twice the raster performance of the GTX 1060, making for a great upgrade – assuming it is available (sigh). Nvidia states late February at this time, so get your browser reload reflex ready. The comparison to the GTX 1060 might seem odd going back two generations, but hardware usage surveys show that the 1060 is actually in use by a very large majority of those gaming at 1080p with Nvidia GPUs.
The RTX 3060 will have 12GB of GDDR6 memory – oh and to take advantage of this RAM in the most efficient way possible – support for the PCIe standard resizable BAR is also coming for all 30 Series GPUs. Enjoy.
The 3060 and 3060ti seem like an MSRP $300ish bargain for that level of performance during this current silicon shortage. May the odds ever be in your favor.
So mobile 3080 gets 16gb, desktop 3060 gets 12gb, 3060ti gets 8gb and 3080 gets 10gb. I understand its an architectural limitation, but it does strike me as odd.
A framerate graph showing points with DLSS should be automatically disqualified.
Your “point” is actually not “pointless” to “point” out. Seriously, there’s a very important distinction to be made between computing all the pixels as being more heavily taxing for a GPU vs having to render about 1/4 of them and then using interpolation.
