Julian Gollop’s Phoenix Point Arrives
More X-COM Than XCOM
Epic Games have yet another exclusive game on their store front, Phoenix Point is out of beta and now available for purchase. There is a lot going on in this game which separates it from the recent reboot, which Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN delves into deeply in their review. For instance, you have an option to zoom right into one of your soldiers and aim the gun for them if you think you have a better chance at hitting than the game and indeed you can even shoot through barriers and damage your enemies if you know where they are.
Unlike the reboot you will not be able to do every mission, there is too much going on to be able to hit every single event happening on your map, so choose wisely. This doesn’t even begin to touch on the various human factions which co-exist with you in this world and who aren’t necessarily interested in supporting your cause. You can check it out here.
Phoenix Point would be easily dismissed as mimicry, were it not directed by Julian Gollop, the designer of the original, 1994 X-COM. After all, it’s difficult to begrudge a man leapfrogging the developers he’s inspired. What elevates this game beyond a victory lap, however, are the ways in which it undoes the streamlining of the turn-based tactics genre.
