One Socket To Rule Them …

** AMD updated us with good news, “1st Gen AMD Ryzen Processors with Radeon Graphics will be supported on the X570 platform”.

The most interesting feature of the new X570 chipset from AMD might not be the performance of the PCIe 4.0 lanes, it might be the amazing compatibility Socket AM4 possesses.   The current generation X470 supports all generations of Ryzen chips, including the new third generation just announced so you do not need to update your motherboard to use a Ryzen 3000 chip.  Indeed, every AM4 chipset barring the A320 will support the new chip and the new chipset will support the previous generation of Ryzen though not the first generation.  This compatibility spans several years and multiple generations of products, something that the competition tends not to offer.

As to why you might want to splurge on a new motherboard, if your current one is up to the task?

It’s all about providing more bandwidth for your storage!   There may not be any PCIe 4.0 GPUs on the market yet, but your NVMe storage will happily do its best to saturate the extra bandwidth available on a PCIe 4.0 lane or four.  The above tests were done by AMD on Crystal DiskMark 6.0.2 using a 2TB NVMe drive with the Phison PS5016-E16 controller so benchmarks may vary from these.  That is still a huge jump for systems that rely on NVMe storage and could well be as noticeable as the original jump from SATA to NVMe.

Finally comes the show case of products.  These are some of the first to hit the market but expect to see numerous other models and form factors in the months to come.
